The Old Lookout exhibition
As part of my Sept, 2014 residency at The Old Lookout Gallery, Broadstairs (courtesy of Obsolete Studios), I showed work from two projects: 'All England Waits' (2013) and and 'and something comes over you...' (2014). Photographic Artist, Sara Rejaie helped with the selection/curation via Skype, and the selection and 'hang' was fine tuned by us in situ.
Both works were made in response to the events of 70 years ago, and in particular the D-Day landings. 'All England Waits' takes love letters from women to their menfolk during WWII as a starting point and 'and something comes over you...' incorporates oral history material from servicemen about to land on the Normandy beaches.
In each of the series, words are important and I used the residency to experiment with how image and text can work together within the exhibition context. There was a temporary 'library' for visitors to enjoy and I am grateful to all of the artists and publishers who sent me work for inclusion.
I am very grateful to Ideas Tap who kindly helped me with the exhibition production costs. 'and something comes over you...' was made as part of the Ideas Tap and Magnum Photographic Award and it is really wonderful that their support has continued beyond the competition.
Thank you to A.C. Riddle for the photograph of me in the gallery.
